The history of the Tatra Gallery began in 1960. At that time, its headquarters were in Starý Smokovec. It is currently located in the stylish premises of the former steam power plant in Poprad.

Stará lesná
Founded
Stará Lesná was founded by the Berzeviczy family in the second half of the 13th century. In 1787, Stará Lesná had 508 inhabitants, who were mainly engaged in cattle breeding, linen production, and later also mountain leadership or work in the forests.
Naming
The name of the village had several forms. In 1294 it is mentioned as Erdewfalva, later in 1499 it is Alsoerdewfalwa and in 1808 it is already Stará Lesná. The village also had the Hungarian name Óleszna or Felsőerdőfalva and the German name Altwalddorf.
The present
Over time, the village of Stará Lesná and its surroundings became an inseparable part of the travel route in the wider area. The necessary infrastructure was built and a number of attractions began to offer their services for the strategic location of the High Tatras. Among the interesting things is certainly the first Tatras robber’s hut.
